Director pilots Honda to hype film 'The Sandlot'

You would think that when Fox video approached director David Mickey Evans with an idea for a nationwide tour promoting his nostalgic cult classic film, the sports comedy The Sandlot,on its 20th anniversary, he'd be logging some serious air miles.
Instead Evans decided to make the 23-stop, six-month tour in his Honda Pilot with his now-fiance and his German shepherd ("my chief of security").
"I am not kidding. It's been 34,000 miles," Evans tells USA TODAY. "All in my Pilot. Dear Honda USA: Your Pilots are bullet proof. But long distance driving is bad on the back."
Evans started in his Florida home and has cris-crossed the country showing the film at Triple A stadiums and big league locations like Dodger Stadium and Target Stadium in Minnesota (the film is also available on 20th edition DVD/Blu-Ray combo kit).
In Salt Lake City, where the film was shot, Evans even proposed to his girlfriend Stacey McGillis in front of 1,500 fans. She said yes. They drove on.
Through it all, Evans insists he didn't have any car malfunctions. Just one minor ding caused, his insists, by another driver.
"Some dude parked behind me really close. And it was hard to see with everything in the car," says Evans. "And I bumped him and cracked my own rear light cover. That's it."
But he had some close calls with some truck drivers on the nation's highways.
"They should stop all truckers from trucking," says Evans. "They are horrible, horrible people. God love them for moving the goods. But they will try to kill you."
When the Georgia event ends, Evans and his traveling team will head back to Florida. Then it's time to start thinking about his road-tested vehicle for the 25th anniversary. "Hello Honda USA," says Evans. "I need a new car."

New Accord Hybrid will get 50 mpg, Honda says

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, which is built in Marysville, has a range of 673 miles.

The new Honda Accord Hybrid will have a best-in-class fuel economy rating of 50 mpg when it goes on sale later this year.
Honda released the fuel-economy figure yesterday for that vehicle, which is being assembled in Marysville.
“It’s an impressive number,” said John O’Dell, senior editor for Edmunds.com. “To have a good-size car with decent fuel economy is a good thing.”
The gas-electric hybrid will have an EPA fuel-economy rating of 50 mpg in the city,
45 mpg on the highway and a combined rating of 47 mpg. It will have a driving range of
673 miles, which is the most in its segment.
As is often the case with hybrids, the city rating is higher than on the highway because the vehicle uses the brakes to help charge the battery in stop-and-start situations.
The Accord’s fuel efficiency is the same or better than other midsize hybrids. The closest competitor is the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which has a rating of 47 mpg in the city and a combined rating of 47 mpg.
The Accord Hybrid is the first hybrid assembled in Ohio by any major automaker. Honda spent $18.8 million and added 50 jobs in Marysville to add hybrid production, the company said.
“We are extremely proud of that 50 (mpg) number,” said Steve Rodriguez, engineering project leader for the Accord Hybrid. “It’s great to be part of that.”
He pointed to several engineering decisions that helped to reduce the vehicle’s weight and improve its fuel economy. For example, the Accord Hybrid has a rear bumper beam made of aluminum instead of steel, he said.
Pricing for the vehicle has not yet been disclosed.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sets guidelines for automakers to test vehicles and come up with the fuel-economy figures that appear in the window sticker.
In some cases, the companies get it wrong and have to revise the numbers. That is what happened this summer with the Ford C-Max hybrid, following complaints from customers. Ford dropped the rating on the compact crossover from 47 mpg to 43 mpg and agreed to compensate buyers for the error.
“People should never take the EPA mileage rating as gospel,” O’Dell said. “It’s just a guide.”

2014 Honda Odyssey First Minivan to Earn Top Safety Pick+ Award [w/video]

You know an automaker is confident about the safety of its vehicles when it asks one of the top crash test agencies to destroy one of its newest models. That's exactly what happened with the 2014 Honda Odyssey. According the Insurance Institute for Highway SafetyHonda requested that the agency run the updated Odyssey through its full barrage of tests, and for good reason.

Aside from slight styling upgrades and a new optional HondaVac built-in vacuum cleaner, the 2014 Odyssey was also given a more rigid passenger compartment using high-strength steel to help better protect occupants. It obviously worked. Following the crash tests, the 2014 Odyssey became the first minivan to earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating, but, more importantly, it did so with "Good" ratings in all five crash categories (four "Goods" and one "Acceptable" are enough for the TSP+). Impressive.
